Is my firearm accepted?

Firearms accepted Sources disagree

Rifles and shotguns, checked baggage only, per Transport Canada Regulations. The tariff separately states firearms and ammunition "for hunting and sporting purposes" are accepted as checked baggage if unloaded, with the safety catch "on" and suitably packed; firearms/ammunition for any other purpose are prohibited from carriage as baggage. Antique firearms, swords, knives and similar weapons may be accepted at the carrier's discretion if suitably packed.

The website names only "rifles and shotguns" as accepted. The tariff's accepted-items clause is phrased more broadly as firearms and ammunition "for hunting and sporting purposes," without naming a firearm type, and separately prohibits firearms/ammunition carried for any non-hunting/sporting purpose. Not resolved here - a traveller with a hunting handgun cannot tell from either source alone whether it is accepted.

rifles and shotguns will be accepted on PAL Airlines as checked baggage only

Tariff (contract of carriage)

Firearms and ammunition for hunting and sporting purposes will be accepted as checked baggage provided the firearms are not loaded, the safety catch is in the "on" position and the firearms are suitably packed.

Follow the stricter of the two. Meeting the tougher requirement satisfies both, and the contract of carriage is what the airline can enforce at the counter.

Packing

Case required Published

Hard-sided cases are accepted, provided the case concealing the firearm is locked and all other firearm policies are followed. No container material/rigidity is otherwise mandated by name - the tariff only requires the firearm be "suitably packed."

PAL Airlines’s wording

Hard-sided cases are accepted, providing the case concealing the firearm is locked and all the above policies are followed.

the firearms are suitably packed

Locks required Published

The firearm must be unloaded and have a secure locking device engaged on the mechanism of the weapon itself (the safety lock engaged), separate from any case lock. If using a hard-sided case, that case must also be locked.

PAL Airlines’s wording

The firearm must be unloaded, and must have a secure locking device on the mechanism of the weapon (i.e. the safety lock must be engaged).

the firearms are not loaded, the safety catch is in the "on" position and the firearms are suitably packed

How much ammunition Published

Maximum of 5 kg (11 lb) of ammunition per passenger.

The website states the limit as "5 kgs or 10 lbs," which is an internally inconsistent conversion (5 kg = ~11 lb, not 10 lb). Quoted verbatim; value above uses the correct 11 lb conversion for clarity while preserving the verbatim excerpt.

PAL Airlines’s wording

A maximum of 5 kgs or 10 lbs of ammunition per passenger will be accepted.

How to pack ammunition Published

Ammunition must be securely packaged in a strong outside container of wood, metal, or fiberboard, OR in its original inner carton, and securely packed inside checked baggage to prevent shifting or accidental functioning. Ammunition must be kept separate from the firearm case - the tariff additionally states the firearm must be unloaded with "all ammunition packaged separately from the firearm."

PAL Airlines’s wording

Ammunition must be securely packaged in a strong outside container of wood, metal, or fiberboard OR in the original inner carton and securely packed inside checked baggage to prevent shifting or accidental functioning. The ammunition must be kept separately from the firearm case.

The firearm(s) must be unloaded and all ammunition must be packaged separately from the firearm.

Booking and check-in

Fee Published

Not stated as a firearm-specific handling fee. The website states firearms are "applicable to baggage fees," i.e. the firearm case is charged under the general checked-baggage fee schedule rather than a dedicated firearm surcharge.

No dollar figure for a firearm-specific fee appears on the website or in the tariff. No inference drawn.

Advance notice Sources disagree

The tariff requires advance arrangements before PAL Airlines will accept firearms and ammunition for transportation; no specific lead time (hours/days) is stated. The website states no advance-notice requirement at all.

The tariff requires advance arrangements before firearms/ammunition will be accepted for transportation. The website's firearms section states no advance-notice requirement at all - only packaging, tagging and declaration-form steps performable at check-in. Not resolved here.

At the airport Published

All checked baggage containing firearms must be affixed with a "Firearm" tag and a "Priority" tag (so the bag "rides" with priority handling); the ammunition container or suitcase must carry a "Priority" tag and an "Ammunition" sticker. Passengers must complete a Firearms Declaration Form. The tariff separately requires the passenger to declare the firearm is not loaded and sign the Firearm(s) Declaration Form, and states that carrying a loaded weapon violates Canadian Aviation Regulation 103.12.

PAL Airlines’s wording

All checked baggage containing firearms must be affixed with a "Firearm" tag and a "Priority" tag. This assures the passenger that the bag will ride. ... PAL Airlines passengers are required to complete a Firearms Declaration Form once these rules are complied with.

Passenger must declare the firearm is not loaded and sign the Firearm(s) Declaration Form. ... Inform the passenger that the carriage of a loaded weapon is a violation of Federal Government Regulations (Act 103.12).
