A British Columbia seaplane operator flying scheduled harbour-to-harbour routes between Vancouver, Victoria, Nanaimo and the Gulf Islands.

Ammunition Not carried Not accepted at all Handling fee Published Advance notice Required No period published Sources disagree 2 rules Follow the stricter one

Is my firearm accepted?

Firearms accepted Sources disagree

DOMESTIC SCHEDULED SERVICE: firearms and ammunition for hunting and sporting purposes, checked baggage only, if unloaded, safety catch "on," and suitably packed; firearms and ammunition for any other purpose are prohibited from carriage as baggage. INTERNATIONAL CHARTER: firearms of any description are carried only with the carrier's prior consent; firearms for sport purposes will be carried if the passenger possesses the required permit/licence and the firearm is disassembled or packed in a suitable case.

The domestic tariff restricts acceptance to firearms "for hunting and sporting purposes" and prohibits any other-purpose firearm/ammunition outright. The international charter tariff instead speaks of "firearms of any description" carried only with prior consent, and separately permits sport-purpose firearms with a licence/permit - a broader starting category (any description) gated by consent, rather than a flat hunting/sporting-only rule. Not resolved here.

Tariff (contract of carriage)

Firearms and ammunition other than for hunting or sporting purposes are prohibited from carriage as baggage.

Tariff (contract of carriage)

Firearms of any description. Firearms for sport purposes will be carried as baggage provided the passenger possesses the required permit/licence

Follow the stricter of the two. Meeting the tougher requirement satisfies both, and the contract of carriage is what the airline can enforce at the counter.

Packing

Case required Sources disagree

DOMESTIC: no container type is specified by name - only "suitably packed," unloaded, safety catch "on." INTERNATIONAL CHARTER: the firearm must be disassembled OR packed in a "suitable case" (no lock requirement stated).

The domestic tariff states only that the firearm be "suitably packed," unloaded and safety-catch-on, with no explicit disassembly option or lock requirement. The international charter tariff allows the firearm to be either disassembled OR packed in a "suitable case," with no lock requirement either. The two tariffs use different vocabulary for what is arguably the same underlying standard; not resolved here because they cover different route types (scheduled domestic vs. charter international) and a traveller should not assume one tariff's wording governs the other's routes.

Tariff (contract of carriage)

the firearms are not loaded, the safety catch is in the "on" position and the firearms are suitably packed

Tariff (contract of carriage)

provided that such firearms are disassembled or packed in a suitable case

Follow the stricter of the two. Meeting the tougher requirement satisfies both, and the contract of carriage is what the airline can enforce at the counter.

Locks required Published

DOMESTIC: unloaded, with the safety catch in the "on" position; no cable lock, trigger lock, or case-lock requirement is stated. INTERNATIONAL CHARTER: no lock requirement stated at all - only disassembly or a "suitable case."

Harbour Air’s wording

How much ammunition Published

No quantity stated. Ammunition for hunting and sporting purposes is accepted as checked baggage subject to ICAO/IATA dangerous goods regulations; ammunition for any other purpose is prohibited from carriage as baggage.

No weight limit (such as the 5 kg other carriers publish) appears in either tariff. No inference drawn.

Harbour Air’s wording

Firearms and ammunition other than for hunting or sporting purposes are prohibited from carriage as baggage.

Booking and check-in

Fee Published

Not stated as a firearm-specific handling fee. A firearm counted as checked baggage is subject to the carrier's general baggage allowance and excess-baggage charge schedule; no dedicated firearm surcharge appears in either tariff.

No firearm-specific fee line appears in either tariff. No inference drawn.

Harbour Air’s wording

Baggage in excess of the free baggage allowance will be accepted by the carrier, subject to the aircraft's capacity, upon payment of the applicable charge.

Advance notice Published

DOMESTIC: no specific advance-notice lead time is stated; the general "Right to Refuse Carriage" clause requires the passenger to give the carrier prior notice of intent to carry an unacceptable-items-list article, without quantifying the notice period. INTERNATIONAL CHARTER: firearms are carried only with the carrier's "prior consent" - also no specific lead time stated.

Neither tariff quantifies the notice period in hours or days. No inference drawn.

Harbour Air’s wording

The carrier will refuse to carry as checked baggage any bag that the carrier has discovered to contain any unacceptable item mentioned in (G) above and when the passenger fails to provide the carrier with prior notice that they wish to carry such an item in their baggage.

The following articles will be carried only with prior consent of the carrier: (a) Firearms of any description.

At the airport Published

Not stated as a named "Firearms Declaration Form" in either tariff. The domestic tariff preserves the carrier's right to search the passenger and baggage to determine whether undeclared arms or ammunition are present, and to refuse carriage if the passenger refuses a search.

Harbour Air’s wording

The purpose of any search is to ensure aircraft and passenger safety, security and to determine whether the passenger is in possession of, or the baggage contains, items mentioned in (G) above or any arms or ammunition which have not been presented to the carrier.

Where you can fly

Where they fly it Published

Two tariffs apply distinct rules: the Scheduled Domestic Tariff (CTA(A) No. 4) governs Harbour Air's scheduled floatplane service, and the International Charter Tariff (CTA(A) No. 7) governs charter operations under Harbour Air Seaplanes, Whistler Air and Saltspring Air outside Canada. The domestic and international firearm clauses materially differ - see conflicts.

Other rules worth knowing Published

Harbour Air is a floatplane/seaplane operator; its domestic tariff publishes maximum checked-baggage dimensions by aircraft type that apply to any firearm case as ordinary checked baggage: Twin Otter 25"x36"x36", Single Otter 18"x42"x54", Beaver 23"x34"x14", Caravan 19"x12"x30" (individual bags also capped at 50 lb for safety reasons). No firearm-specific aircraft limit is published separately from these general dimension caps. The international charter tariff exempts Peace Officers' prescribed sidearms from its firearms clause. Antique firearms, swords, knives and similar items may be accepted at the domestic carrier's discretion if suitably packed.

Individual bags cannot weigh more than 50 lbs each (domestic tariff, Rule 55(C)(2)) - relevant to a hard-sided firearm case, which can be heavy.

Harbour Air’s wording

Maximum Luggage Dimensions by Aircraft Type Aircraft Dimensions (Width x Length x Height) Twin Otter 25” x 36” x 36” Single Otter 18” x 42” x 54” Beaver 23” x 34” x 14” Caravan 19” x 12” x 30”

The provisions of this subparagraph do not apply to Peace Officers' prescribed sidearms or other similar weapons.
