Is my firearm accepted?

Firearms accepted Published

DOMESTIC ONLY: non-restricted firearms as defined in the Criminal Code of Canada, and only if solely for hunting and sporting purposes. Checked baggage only, never carry-on. INTERNATIONAL: firearms and ammunition are not accepted at all.

This answers the question the design doc flags as disputed ("whether Flair accepts rifles at all"): yes on domestic flights, for non-restricted hunting/sporting firearms only; no on international flights. Added in verification pass 2 (2026-11-01): the website publishes an explicit accepted-types list, which the first pass did not capture. It names only "Unrestricted Rifles", independently corroborating restricted_accepted: No, and it is narrower than the tariff's open-ended "non-restricted firearms" - no handguns of any kind appear on it.

Flair Airlines’s wording

Non-restricted firearms, as defined in the Criminal Code of Canada and otherwise not restricted under (1) above, are permitted subject to the following rules: (a) they are not permitted in carry-on Baggage under any circumstances and are only permitted in Checked Baggage if and only if they are solely for hunting and sporting purposes;

(O) Firearms. Firearms and ammunition, including for hunting and sporting purposes, will not be accepted for carriage.

Restricted firearms (e.g. handguns) Published

No - strictly prohibited

Flair is the only Tier 1 carrier that refuses restricted firearms outright. Air Canada and Air Transat accept "certain handguns"; WestJet and Porter explicitly accept restricted firearms. This makes Flair unusable for handgun/RPAL travel.

Flair Airlines’s wording

Restricted and prohibited firearms, as defined in the Criminal Code of Canada or as otherwise categorized as such by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, are strictly prohibited.

Packing

Case required Published

Locked hard-sided container, plus any additional requirements under applicable law

Flair Airlines’s wording

they MUST be unloaded and packed in a locked hard-sided container and in accordance with any additional requirements per applicable law.

Tariff (assets.ctfassets.net) Verified 1 November 2026
Locks required Published

Firearm must be unloaded, packed in a locked hard-sided container, AND rendered inoperable by bolt/trigger lock or disassembly. The tariff requires only the unloaded firearm in a locked hard-sided container, deferring otherwise to "any additional requirements per applicable law"; the website adds the bolt/trigger-lock-or-disassembly requirement and specifies the case be heavy-duty and hard-sided (opaque).

Corrected in verification pass 2 (2026-11-01). The first pass recorded that the "rendered inoperable by bolt/trigger lock or disassembly" wording was NOT found on any live Flair page. It IS present, in the dedicated "Firearms" section of the restricted and prohibited items page, confirmed by two independent headless-Chrome fetches (the second with a clean profile, cache disabled and a cache-busting query parameter). This matters operationally: the website imposes a lock-or-disassembly obligation on the firearm itself that the tariff alone does not.

Flair Airlines’s wording

they MUST be unloaded and packed in a locked hard-sided container and in accordance with any additional requirements per applicable law.

Each firearm must be carried and packaged in a locked, heavy-duty container or hard-sided (opaque) gun case, accompanied by a signed declaration, unloaded, and rendered inoperable by bolt/trigger lock or disassembly.

How much ammunition Sources disagree

No - ammunition cannot be carried. The firearms section of the restricted and prohibited items page states "No ammunition can be carried." No quantity limit is published because no quantity is permitted; Flair is the only Tier 1 carrier that refuses ammunition outright (the other four each allow up to 5 kg).

Restated in verification pass 2. The website's firearms section flatly refuses ammunition ("No ammunition can be carried"), yet the domestic tariff's 48-hour clause expressly contemplates a passenger wishing "to transport firearms, parts of firearms or ammunition" and gives the Carrier a dangerous-goods right of refusal over ammunition, which presupposes ammunition is otherwise acceptable. The practical answer for a traveller is settled - do not bring ammunition - but the tariff, which is the Contract of Carriage, has not been updated to match. Not resolved here.

flyflair.com

No ammunition can be carried.

Tariff (contract of carriage)

arrangements with the Carrier must be made at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled departure if a passenger wishes to transport firearms, parts of firearms or ammunition.

Follow the stricter of the two. Meeting the tougher requirement satisfies both, and the contract of carriage is what the airline can enforce at the counter.

Booking and check-in

Fee Sources disagree

Airline does not publish this — contact them

Circular reference between official sources: the international tariff states all baggage fees are published on the website, and the website publishes no firearm fee. The fee is therefore undeterminable from official sources.

Tariff (contract of carriage)

All baggage fees are published on the Carrier's website for ease of reference for passengers

Advance notice Published

At least 48 hours prior to scheduled departure (domestic tariff), and the firearm must also be identified in advance during online check-in. Online check-in closes 120 minutes prior to departure.

Note corrected in verification pass 2 (2026-11-01). The website and the tariff agree on 48 hours - the website's firearms section reads "Arrangements must be made at least 48 hours before scheduled departure before such items can be transported." The first pass recorded that the website gave no timeframe, having seen only the page's separate one-line note "Firearms and ammunition may be transported only with prior approval and must comply with our specific requirements." The recorded 48-hour value was correct; only the note was wrong.

Flair Airlines’s wording

When to arrive Published

Firearm baggage drop-off deadline is 90 minutes prior to scheduled departure - a firearm-specific deadline, 30 minutes earlier than the general 60-minute baggage drop-off deadline.

This is a hard deadline, not a recommendation - unlike Air Canada's and Porter's advisory arrival times. Missing it means the firearm is not accepted.

Flair Airlines’s wording

Baggage drop-off deadline for Firearms 90 minutes prior to scheduled departure

In airport check-in including baggage drop-off (other than for firearms, see below, and rules regarding pets, mobility devices, and as otherwise specified by Carrier)* Closes 60 minutes prior to scheduled departure

At the airport Published

Two steps: identify the firearm in advance during online check-in, then declare it to the Carrier during airport check-in. Failure to declare is a breach of the Contract of Carriage and entitles Flair to refuse to transport the passenger and/or firearm with no refund and no liability.

Flair is the only Tier 1 carrier requiring the firearm to be flagged during ONLINE check-in, which closes 120 minutes before departure. No "Firearms Declaration Form" is named, unlike the other four carriers.

Flair Airlines’s wording

they must be identified in advance during online check in and declared to the Carrier during the check-in process at the airport

Failure to declare a firearm is deemed to be a breach of the Contract of Carriage and entitles the Carrier to refuse to transport the Passenger and or firearm without providing any refund and without any liability.

Where they fly it Published

Domestic (within Canada) only. The international tariff refuses firearms and ammunition outright, including for hunting and sporting purposes. Transborder Canada-US travel is not separately addressed by a dedicated tariff; the international tariff governs travel outside Canada.

Other rules worth knowing Published

Flair reserves the right to refuse any non-restricted firearm or ammunition that is non-compliant with ICAO Technical Instructions or the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations, or whose packaging it believes presents a risk. The firearms rule does not apply to Officers of the Law travelling in the line of duty with legally prescribed sidearms. Antique firearms are separately listed among items the Carrier will not accept liability for / accepts only as described in the valuables rule.

Flair Airlines’s wording

Carrier has the right to refuse to carry any non-restricted firearms or ammunition including where they are non-compliant with the ICAO Technical Instructions for the Safe Transport of Dangerous Goods by Air and the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations or if Carrier believes the packaging of such items presents a risk.
